Security Updates (Resolved)
  • Priority - Critical
  • Affecting Server - Linode Andromeda
  • Please note that our upstream provider has notified us that on March 8, 2015 from 04:00 until 06:00 there will be a scheduled outage.  During this time some high priority security updates will be applied to the server.   This scheduled window is necessary since software providers will be providing the details of the fix which will alert the public to a security hole that they may not currently be aware of.  In order to mitigate the potential for breaches to the server, the security updates will fix the issues before they become public knowledge.

We appreciate your patience while we perform the update.

Kernel Upgrade (Resolved)
  • Priority - Critical
  • Affecting Server - Linode Andromeda
  • The Kernel was upgraded and transferred to the CloudLinux version, rather than just CentOS 6.  This upgrade brings along more stability, more features and negates the need to restart the server in the future for kernel upgrades.  Fewer restarts means more online availability for you and more online accessibility for your clients.

The upgrade is now complete.  If you have any issues that you believe may be associated with this upgrade, please open a support ticket and we'll get to it ASAP.

SPAM (Resolved)
  • Priority - Medium
  • Affecting Server - Linode Andromeda
  • Over the last couple days from Wednesday until around 18:15pm MST, a large number of emails were sent out under one of the email accounts on our system.  It seems someone from IP address 200.121.85.14 had managed to brute force the password and was able to send out roughly 100,000 emails during that time.  About 15,000 of those made it to their destination email accounts.  The remaining emails were removed from the queue and deleted from the system.  The affected user has since deleted the affected email account and the IP address has been blocked from access to our servers.

If you were one of the users affected by this SPAM, we sincerely apologize and regret any inconvenience caused by this intrusion.

Major Outage (Resolved)
  • Priority - Critical
  • Affecting Server - Linode Andromeda
  • A major outage was experienced due to a perfect storm caused by a piece of software we use to enable DNSSEC, our firewall and DNS records not updating remotely all at the same time.  The DNSSEC service was disabled temporarily and the firewall and DNS records were repaired.  The majority of the outage time was waiting for DNS propogation to update the TLD DNS servers with the appropriate records.  As a result of this, our firewall has improved to have much tighter control of incoming and outgoing connections, the DNSSEC software provider was notified of and repaired the issue so that this doesn't happen again in the future.

We're extremely sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused and appreciate your continued business.

Server Upgrade (Resolved)
  • Priority - Critical
  • Affecting Server - Linode Andromeda
  • The server was down for approximately 31 minutes as a result of a server upgrade.  With the server upgrade came an upgrade from a 250Mbps network connection to a faster 500Mbps network connection, Hard Disk operations are now on newer, faster and more reliable Solid State Drives as well as the server receiving a RAM boost.  We hope that this didn't cause too much inconvenience and look forward to better performance on all our hosted sites!

Moving Server (Resolved)
  • Priority - Critical
  • Affecting Server - Linode Andromeda
  • Please be advised that, in order to serve our clients better, we have begun the process of moving all our services to a new server.  The old server was not properly supporting IPv6 and had slower bandwidth than we'd like to provide to our clients.

The scheduled outage will be on December 1 from midnight MST to midnight the morning of December 2.  This is just the scheduled period and the actual outage will likely be dramatically shorter, but the possibility remains.
